The Inter-Ministerial Group for Preparing the 2016 NATO Summit in Warsaw met for the first time at the Ministry of National Defence on Wednesday. The Group was established this March pursuant to an order issued by Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz.

The Group is chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Tomasz Siemoniak. Minister of Foreign Affairs Grzegorz Schetyna is the Group’s deputy chairman. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Administration and Digitization, Ministry of Finance, Chancelleries of the President and Prime Minister, the National Security Bureau, and uniformed services.

Ambassador Tomasz Chłoń was appointed the MFA’s Plenipotentiary for Preparing the Summit and Colonel Rafał Nowak of the Ministry of National Defence was appointed his deputy.

The NATO summit will be held in mid-2016 at the National Stadium in Warsaw. President Bronisław Komorowski extended invitations to NATO heads of state to attend the Warsaw summit during the NATO summit in Newport, Wales, last September.

The Group was set up by the Order of Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz of 2 March 2015. The Group is an auxiliary body of the Council of Ministers. Its main responsibilities encompass coordinating activities of different government agencies, including local government units, and drafting an action plan to prepare the NATO summit in Warsaw. The Group will also monitor work progress and perform periodic reviews.
